Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons active dry yeast

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup cinnamon sugar (for filling)

1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Optional: powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. In another bowl, mix the warm milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Gradually add the liquid mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until combined.

Knead the Dough: Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a sticky dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Prepare the Filling: While the dough is rising, mix the cinnamon sugar in a small bowl and set aside.

Shape the Star Bread: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into four equal pieces. Roll each piece into a circle about 12 inches in diameter. On the first circle, spread a thin layer of cinnamon sugar. Place the second circle on top and repeat the process until all circles are stacked.

Cut and Twist: Place a glass or a small bowl in the center of the stacked circles (to keep the shape). Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the dough into 16 equal segments, stopping just before the center. Take two adjacent segments and twist them away from each other, creating a star-like shape.

Second Rise: Carefully transfer the twisted dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover with a cloth and let it rise for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Egg Wash: Brush the top of the star bread with the beaten egg for a glossy finish.

Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Serve: Allow to cool for a few minutes before dusting with powdered sugar if desired. Pull apart the star bread pieces for easy sharing!
