Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

1/2 cup whole milk

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Oil for frying

For the Glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons whole milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.

In a separate bowl, combine the milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract and whisk until smooth.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it just until it holds together. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick.

Use a donut cutter (or two round cookie cutters of different sizes) to cut out your donuts. Gather and re-roll any scraps to make additional donuts.

Heat oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully lower the donuts into the hot oil, frying them for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Make sure not to overcrowd the pot.

Once cooked, remove the donuts and let them drain on paper towels.

For the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth.

While the donuts are still warm, dip the tops into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off.

Let the glazed donuts rest on a wire rack for a few minutes to set the glaze before serving.
